I can imagine her plausibly reacting to it in two ways, both of which I think would maintain her mentality that (at least most, if not all) dragons are good and gentle creatures. But this dragon, the Red Death, would be tougher for her to understand than anything else she had thus far encountered. I don’t think she’d doubt the other dragons were good (maybe for a time she’d feel betrayed by Cloudjumper for him taking her here). It would probably have frightened her greatly and made her question whether or not this dragon were good. I could see her becoming disconcerted watching an enormous monster eating other dragons which did not bring it enough food. However, I would say that the Red Death probably would have challenged Valka’s mental framework regarding dragons’ goodness. It meant that the Vikings and the dragons were both fighting for the exact same thing, in fact: living to see another day. She even could have argued as this for evidence, if she really wanted to, since it proved that six generations’ worth of war did not come about from draconic aggression alone. If Valka noticed that, then she very well could have perpetuated her already-existing beliefs that dragons were good creatures. Perhaps like Hiccup she could have had the perspicacity to notice that the majority of dragons were not raiding Berk out of any malevolent or selfish intent, but out of a fear for survival. This means it is possible, though not guaranteed, that Valka could have continued to believe that dragons could be good even if Cloudjumper took her to the Red Death.

She believed something that really seemed contrary to what everyone else could clearly see. Of course she was unpopular with the rest of Berk. So Valka grew up being able to have faith in a very unsubstantiated claim. Maybe, pending on how the timeline went, she even personally saw Gobber lose his arm and leg to dragons, and he was probably already somewhat close to the Haddock family given that he made Hiccup’s diapers. She probably saw friends she knew maimed or killed by dragons. But Valka grew up in a time where all the evidence already pointed to the dragons being bad. Sure, the Vikings did not understand the cause of those dragon raids (the Red Death). Dragons stole food, burned down houses, and even fought people directly. The Hairy Hooligans had six generations’ worth of experience with dragons locked in war, where the humans were fighting for their very survival.

Notice that this belief stands in complete contrast to all the evidence Vikings around her “knew” about dragons at the time. She believed that dragons could be gentle creatures and that they were good. allow me to write a fic based on it? It’s really a fascinating hypothetical to say the least and I think it’d be amazing to explore. In fact, I love it so much, I’m going to plea for something from you… could you please please please either 1.
